A youth lobby group in Nakuru has petitioned the county government to use devolved funds to build youth polytechnics in all parts of the county to enhance productivity among the youth. While addressing a public forum in Mawanga business centre on Wednesday, the chair of Mawanga Youth Agenda (MYA) Antony Waweru observed that Nakuru County lacks informal training centres that can tap talent and provide employment to other youth graduating from University and colleges. According to Waweru, the county government should use devolved funds to build village polytechnics across the county to provide a sustainable education, training and employment opportunities. “We would like to petition the county government to use devolved funds to set up youth polytechnics in all sub counties. We need to tap talent and create employment opportunities to other youth who have finished university and college education but have no jobs,” he said. Waweru said that the county government should stop misusing public funds on unsustainable projects and instead invest in projects with far reaching results like youth polytechnics. He added that training in creative arts, sports, carpentry, masonry, entrepreneurship, fashion design, beauty, and mechanics among others can help empower the youth who fail to make it to secondary school, colleges and universities and those already serving in the sectors without formal skills.
