Gucha South assistant County commissioner James Wambua has said residential houses near rivers will be demolished to curb unnecessary deaths.
Mr Wambua urged residents living near houses to plan on how they would vacate and have their houses demolished to avoid loss of lives and property.
"Houses that were constructed near rivers should be demolished down. We don’t want people to lose lives and property due to floods once the river banks break,” he said.
The commissioner said anyone who will defy the order will be dealt with accordingly.
“There are safe areas where locals should construct houses and avoid dangerous areas prone to floods. We should all be careful since we don’t want to be a big burden to the government every time when rains come,” he stated.
He urged the lands and housing department to ensure houses with cracks in the area are declared unsafe to avert deaths.
“Buildings which have developed cracks should be brought down and have new houses constructed for safety purposes. Tenants should vacate dangerous houses,” added Wambua.
