Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has hinted at appointing his gubernatorial opponent during the August 8 general election Boni Khalwale as Chief Executive Committee member for bullfighting.
Oparanya who was speaking at Kakamega High School during the fifth Devolution Conference said Khalwale's passion for the annual bullfighting event "has earned him the new appointment", adding that he will be happy to work with the former Senator.
The county chief caused a light moment when he made the announcement as senators who worked with Khalwale at the Senate between 2013 and 2017 burst into laughter.
"Kakamega County is known for its bullfighting and you remember the former Senator Boni Khalwale used to be the promoter and because we are missing him, I am considering appointing him to be in charge of bullfighting," said Oparanya.
The annual event usually attracts residents of Kakamega as well as those in neighbouring counties.
Some international tourists also attend the events held in open fields where bulls from different farms are given herbs before the fight.
Khalwale is among prominent figures in Kakamega County who organises the competitions.
Oparanya beat Khalwale in the Kakamega gubernatorial contest to retain his seat as governor. He will serve until 2022 when he will hand over the button to the next governor.
