Residents of Nasianda village in Bumula constituency, Bongoma County are recovering from shock following an incident in which an alleged drunkard married off his daughter in exchange of local liquor.
Cases of early marriages are common in Kenya, with most communities still practicing the vice maintaining that this is their culture which they don't intent to give up.
The Bungoma man is reported to have married off his class seven pupil who attends school at Nabumali Primary to a local chang'aa brewer with the latter giving him chang'aa as dowry payment.
According to reports, the brewer accepted the proposal tabled by the man to be drinking two bottles of chang'aa every day until the dowry is completed.
The shocking incident has left many parents in the area pointing an accusing finger to the authorities who have been accused of not taking action to save the young girl.
Area MP Boniface Otsiula has, however, called asked the police to arrest the suspects and also ensure the girl goes back to school.
