A police officer in Bungoma died after firing at himself under unclear circumstances, Sunday night.
The cop identified as Bernard Irungu reportedly shot himself on the head at around 8pm.
According to Mt Elgon OCPD Peterson Gitaga, Irungu had been assigned to go for regular police patrols alongside other police officers.
“He excused himself, went to his house and we heard a gunshot ten minutes later,” Gitaga told the press.
“When fellow officers sort to find out what had happened, they found him lying in a pool of blood on his bed,” he added.
The OCPD said investigations on the matter were ongoing.
“His body was taken to Kaptora mortuary as we continue with investigations on how he tried to take his own life.”
The police boss described the deceased as a humble person who loved his career.
It is believed the late Irungu stayed alone at the Sambojo police post while his family stayed in the Central region.
