Hundreds of Bungoma County residents took to the streets to celebrate former Governor Kenneth Lusaka’s win in the Senate Speaker race.
Lusaka was fronted by the Jubilee Party against outgoing Speaker Ekwe Ethuro.
In an interview with The Nation, Mike Nyongesa, a Jubilee Party youth leader in Bungoma said, "We are very happy that he has been elected the Senate Speaker."
Nyongesa called on Lusaka to work well with Senator Moses Wetang'ula for the sake of development in Bungoma County.
"His election to the Senate now prepares him for the big task ahead. We are sure he will be holding some big posts in future. Let him handle the Senate professionally as it prepares him for other bigger duties," he told Nation.
NASA leaders led by Senator James Orengo, prior to Lusaka's election had opposed the move by Jubilee to endorse the former Governor.
Orengo said Lusaka was unfit for the seat over integrity issues.
During his tenure, Bungoma county government spent Sh1.9 million on 10 wheelbarrows, sparking outrage among Kenyans.
