Deputy President was at the Coast drumming up support for the Jubilee administration as the August polls near. While in Likoni on Friday, its residents forced the Deputy to address the maize shortage crisis being experienced in the Country for the past two months. The residents chanted ‘Unga’ shouting the Deputy down while he addressed a rally at Caltex grounds. Misreading the crowd, the deputy decided to address the drug problem affecting the region instead of the food crisis.“Hatutaki watu waseme unga kumbe ni ile unga ingine,” he said in Swahili. “Mambo ya hiyo unga ingine haina nafasi kwa Kenya hii. Wale matapeli wanadhani watauza unga kwa vijana wetu, chuma chao kimotoni.”Back on the maize shortage, he blamed the county governments as agriculture is a devolved unit. He said the national government has imported subsidized fertilizer and has issued seeds countrywide. On the recently imported maize fiasco, the deputy had this to say.“We are now surprised that they are busy criticising us and asking why we bought maize from Mexico. Why didn’t we buy from South Africa?” he posted. “Is our agenda to ensure we bring down the cost of living or we start asking where the maize came from? Hawa watu ni bure kabisa.”
