Speaking at the Nyamira County headquarters on Monday, Onunga observed that the trend was hindering the academic standards in the county and if it stopped the levels of education would rise steadily.

She observed that the residents were burying their loved ones on Fridays and the use of the school grounds for funerals affected learning programmes.

Onunga urged stakeholders and opinion leaders in the area to find a solution to the 'problem' which she said affected at least two days per week in the learning programmes in most schools in the county.

Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama also faulted the practice, saying it was eating away school timetables and appealed to the area residents to conduct their burial ceremonies during weekends.

He noted that members of the public had resorted to holding funeral ceremonies at school grounds due to diminishing land sizes at their homes but warned against interference of school programmes to give way to funerals.

The governor observed that averagely, students in the area lose up to three days per week due to funerals.
