The Burji community has rejected governor Ukur Yatani's re-election bid. The community's leaders said the governor has failed to show his capacity to develop Marsabit County.
"His decision to seek for re-election without consulting us means he does not value our role in the politics of Marsabit," the community's chairman Ibrahim Abi said on Tuesday at a meeting in Marsabit town.
"We will work with his opponents who openly came to talk to the community. He has also not demonstrated that he can help poor people in the county to fight poverty," he said.
Governor Yatani is expected to tussle it out with US-based consultant Sora Adano during the August poll.
Clan politics in the far-flung counties of Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera play a critical role in one's election into political office and the Burji community, being one of the largest in the county means politicians scramble to seek for its blessing during elections.
Marsabit is Kenya's biggest county in terms of land size.
With a 500-kiometres border stretch wit Ethiopia, the devolved unit which hosts the largest wind power project in Africa is also home to the Chalbi desert.
