Over 180 students in South West Kisumu ward in Kisumu West Constituency studying in various institutions are set to benefit from county education funds.
South West Kisumu Ward representative Jossy Abiola said he will release the cheques worth Sh1 million, to the beneficiaries next week.
Abiola said the beneficiaries are from poor families and studying in secondary schools, colleges and universities, while some are in driving schools.
“The list of the beneficiaries was drafted during a public participation and this process is people driven,” said Abiola.
Speaking in his ward, Abiola said students who had applied and missed will be considered in the second disbursement.
“The application was overwhelming and I want to assure my people that there will be another disbursement where those who missed will be considered,” added Abiola.
The fund manager Philip Ogol said the selections of the students who are going to receive the cheques were done over board.
Ogol said the bursary fund is meant for every needy student, and there is no discrimination in the awarding of such funds.
“We strived to ensure that the students who benefitted come from all the locations in the ward and there should not be cases of marginalization in the disbursement,” he said.
Abiola further lauded Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma for the timely release of the bursary funds to enable students to start their lessons in January when schools re-open.
“I want to ask the Governor to continue supporting education since that is the future for our county,” he said.
