A popular bus company has stopped its trips to various parts of Western Kenya over the lack of security for passengers and its vehicles.

This is following the chaos witnessed after the repeat presidential election last week.

Mash East Africa which is based in Mombasa and operates the mash branded passengers vehicle says it has stopped its trips to and from Kisumu, Mumias, Kakamega and Malaba as from last Saturday.

According to the company's general manager Lennox Shallo, the decision by the firm to close its offices and withdraw its buses from the stated routes has been reached so as secure lives of passengers as well also prevent its vehicles from being destroyed in chaos.

"We have closed to secure our buses and also the lives of the passengers. If my property is destroyed, no one will pay me,” said, Lennox on Monday at their offices in Mwembe Tayari.

Shallo has also noted that the business has been performing poorly during the poll period with an approximate of 10 people travelling to Nairobi.

“We had two buses operating to and from Nairobi carrying many passengers before the recently concluded elections. However, we now only have few people travelling. Like now only 10 people are travelling to Nairobi,” he said.

Western Kenya is perceived to be the opposition's stronghold and has seen the youths blocking major highways forcing the anti-riot police to engage them in running battles.
