Mandera county commissioner Fredrick Shisia has announced suspension of bus services in the county for three days following an Al Shabaab attack on Monday.
Al Shabaab terrorists attacked police officers who were escorting a passenger bus and 2 police vehicles were burnt down during the attack.
Shisia said the suspension will help reorganize security escort for passenger vehicles in the county.
"Following the Monday attack, we have decided to suspend the movement of buses along the road as we assess the security situation", said the commissioner.
He noted that consultations are ongoing with the bus operators and security team in Nairobi to get the replacement of the vehicles that were destroyed.
"Once the replacement is done, bus escort will resume. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused", he said.
He added that passengers in Elwak town will be escorted by police to Mandera town.
Shisia said no bus will be allowed to leave Mandera for Nairobi before the situation normalizes.
He urged members of the public to share information with the police on the presence of the militants in the county.
