Concerns have been raised by police in Busia county over ladies refusing to wear helmets.
According to the police, the women fear their hairstyles will be spoiled by the helmets.
Busia Traffic Base Commander Gerald Gitau has however urge the women to wear the helmets so as to prevent hurting their heads in case an accident occurs when they are being ridden on boda bodas.
“Unfortunately if a woman is involved in an accident and her hair is ripped off, she will be forced to buy natural hair which is expensive. To avoid such scenario it is good to wear helmets,” Gitau said.
He spoke Friday, during a Busia Road Safety and Peace Awareness Workshop at Agricultural Training Centre.
Busia woman representative Florence Mutua asked the women to swallow their pride and put on the helmets saying life is more important than hairstyles.
“Let hairstyles not be a hindrance. They will save your lives. Hairstyles are not important than your children when you get involved in a fatal accident,” said Mutua.
However, Busia boda boda Sacco chairman Eric Makokha supported the ladies decisions.
“It is their right not to wear helmets which could spoil their hair or make them inhale some strange diseases. The dealers should come up with disinfectants to clean helmets for any new user,” said Makokha.
