The business community in Kisumu has urged politicians who organise anti-IEBC demonstrations to caution protesters against causing damages to property.

They also want protesters controlled from poking the police to avoid loss of lives.

They described as unfortunate scenarios where leaders disappear as soon as demonstrations turn chaotic, allowing rowdy youth to plunge into anarchy, which results in life loss and property damages.

They said lack of direction was to blame the for mentality that demos mean destruction.

“Leaders have failed to sensitize youth on peaceful demonstrations,” said Betty Okero of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya.

She said: "It is only in Luo Nyanza that when you talk of a protests people think it means going to war.”

Representatives from the hospitality and tourism industry, transport, real estate, small enterprises, Juakali artisans, the chamber of commerce and industry and the association of manufacturers were holed up in a meeting on Sunday and promised to stand up against waywardness during demonstrations.

During the meeting in which top political leaders and the police bosses were invited but failed to attend, the economy drivers sought to know why only Luo Nyanza was witnessing violent demonstrations, police brutality and damage to property when the demonstrations took place across all Cord strongholds.

They called for peaceful protests and which must only last up to midday to enable business to continue, saying they lost hundreds of millions during protests.

“If they cannot stop destruction, we will mobilize the youth to shun the protests,” said Chairman of the Kisumu Centre Juakali Artisans Association Jacob Ouma.
