A section of the business community from Nyamira town have called for constructive talks between government and opposition over escalating crisis about embattled electoral commission.
This comes after defiant opposition vowed to counties with its weekly protest to push for disbandment of the electoral body IEBC.
On Wednesday, the business community members led by Jonathan Makori said the protests were affecting their businesses, and urged government to bend low for dialogue.
“As members of business community from Nyamira, we want to challenge the government and opposition to swallow their pride and have a constructive dialogue over the IEBC,” he said.
“We cannot allow these weekly protests to continue because they are affecting our operations leading massive loses. This has to be solved on a round table for the sake of people who solely depend on business like us,” he added.
He said many business operators had reverted to closing their area of operations due to uncertainty of their security.
“The government should not remain mum over this matter because it’s of national concern. If the opposition doesn’t want the IEBC then they should have a dialogue. At the end of it all, the protests will ruin our economy,” he added.
The government has not shown signs of embracing dialogue weeks after opposition Chief Raila Odinga wrote to President Uhuru Kenyatta calling for dialogue.
