Mawanga Teachers Business Owners Association Chairman James Maina has said that the Nakuru Couty government tax collection officials were abetting corruption by continuously extorting money and demanding for other favours from business operators in the area.
He said this when he addressed the association members during a consultative meeting that was held at Deliverance Church grounds on Saturday.
According to the chairman of the newly formed association, many traders were complaining about the corrupt behavours of the county tax officials who rarely fail to fault traders over the capacity and status of their businesses.
“Like the traffic police officers do to the vehicle operators, our friends’ never fail to find a mistake to warrant a bribe. We are getting tired of this and the only remedy is to follow the law and report them for abetting corruption,’’ said Maina.
The chairman advised the association members to pay taxes and keep the records and certificates so as to avoid harassment that is aimed at seeking for bribes from the tax collectors.
Maina added that the traders loose thousands of money monthly from bribes solicited by the county government officials yet their profits were not so good to warrant that trend.
“If we want to beat them in their own game, let us pay taxes. Let us apply for licenses and keep the certificates. We will take the necessary action if they continue harassing us,” warned Maina.
