Business has returned to normal in Kilifi Town following Thursday’s repeat presidential election.Traders across the town including the busy Oloitip Tip market opened their business premises and continued with normal activities unlike on August 8 when tension was high as Kenyans waited for the announcement of the final presidential results. Several streets including Biashara Street which had been deserted during Thursday’s poll, were full of activity on Friday as traders and buyers conducted their businesses.Juma Kahindi, a food vendor in the town, said there was no cause for alarm as traders in the area had agreed to maintain peace move on with their lives.“I have just offloaded my cargo from Mombasa. I am back to my business because life has to continue. We have to move forward after Thursday election,” said Kahindi, as quoted by the Nation.“We are fine here. There has been a lot of a political activity but one thing which has stood out in this area is the peace. We have remained calm,” added Joseph Nthiga, a businessman.Areas which had been listed by police as potential hotspots of violence including Chumani, Mwarakaya, Ngerenya, and Dzitsoni were calm as business went on as usual. The repeat presidential election in the county, a perceived opposition stronghold, attracted a low turnout after National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga urged his supporters to boycott the polls.
