On Thursday evening in Kibera DC market, traders had a difficult time as their business stalls got demolished by heavy rains and strong winds that left more than 5 business stalls demolished.
The traders said the stalls had been demolished by the heavy rains that weakened the stalls and later felled leaving them stranded in the market.
“The heavy rains of April are the major cause of demolition of the stalls. The stalls had already shown signs of weakness because they had never been repaired since they were constructed,” said Margaret Muthoni, a trader.
“Maintenance is required for the stalls. Since they were constructed, they have never been repaired. The market municipal officials are only interested in collecting daily taxes and monthly rent from the stalls but they do not care for the safety of the traders. What if the traders were there when the stalls were destroyed, don’t you think deaths would have occurred?”Said Muthoni.
No causalities were reported during the incident.
