Several small businesses in Kisii town and its suburbs have closed down due to mass exodus of students from various institutions heading for April vocations.

Many institutions among them Jomo Kenyatta University(Kisii Campus), Mt. Kenya University Kisii branch and Kisii University have concluded their Jan-April semester, leading to a mass exodus of students from town.

Among those his by the expected departure of students are those trading in vegetables, barbers and shoe shiners from the region, whose customers have been established to be students.

According to Mr. Joseph Omwenga, he officially closed his ‘Kinyozi’ on Friday due to significant reduction of his clients. He parked for his rural home waiting resuming of institutions on May.

“I have officially closed my business today. I no longer have customers and to reduce expenses, I have to go to my rural home till students resume their studies,” Mr. Omwenga said.

Mrs. Caroline Makana admitted of the significant reduction in profits since most of her vegetable customers were students who have since left.

“I am reconsidering to close for a while till they come. There is no essence of purchasing many commodities since I may be working at loses. On Thursday I recorded the worst ever outing by only getting a profit of 50 Kshs from the usual of about 600Kshs,” she added.
