Residents of Githurai, Kiambu County received three drilling rigs from a local businessman to enable them drill water in their homes and institutions.
Speaking on Thursday at Githurai Soko ya Mawe grounds where he flagged off the drilling machines, Eston Gakuo a Miyani trading enterprises CEO said the move is part of the development projects that Githurai needs. He noted that Githurai has huge population and should therefore not lack water.
Gakuo regretted that the County government of Kiambu has only two water towers situated at Thika and Kariri water sewerage companies leading to most residents not having access to clean water.
“Such a big county like Kiambu should develop more water towers to reduce this water shortage crisis. It’s not logical to reside within Nairobi and lack water,” he said.
The businessman, however, said with the machines in place, residents especially women shall be relieved off the burden of walking long distances to fetch water from the river.
He said that the machine will first drill wells at schools and the market centre’s before shifting to every household within Githurai.
He, however, advised residents to use the water for only domestic purposes. The machine will drill water to a depth of up to 120 meters and will expected to be complete by Saturday this week. This donation comes after a huge water shortage was experienced in Githurai this week. The machines cost the company Sh950,000.
