Police officers in Mombasa are probing an incident in which a fish trader was shot by armed robbers.
According to Baraka FM, the armed robbers shot Ali Mohammed and his driver Najib Mohammed under unclear circumstances before stealing an unspecified amount of money.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, Mombasa Deputy County Commissioner Mohammed Salim said the incident occurred at around 12.30p.m.
Salim also said the gangsters were armed with an AK 47 rifle during the attack, adding that they had parked their motorbike near the scene of the incident before attacking the trader who had just sold his fish at the local market.
“He has just sold the fish when two gunmen in a motorcycle approached the man and demanded the cash. They shot him after a scuffle ensued, injuring him,” said Salim, as quoted by the local daily.
Ali, who has a bullet lodged in his hip and his driver were taken to MEWA hospital where they are expected to undergo surgery.
Police officers recovered one live bullet and nine used cartridges at the scene of the crime.
