Kenya could be headed for a series of by elections preceding 2017 elections following the decision by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to uphold its decision of expelling ten members.
ODM had declined the request by affected members among them MPs, Governor and a Deputy Governor to drop an earlier decision of expelling from the party.
On Tuesday, Registrar of political parties Lucy Ndung’u informed the affected members formerly about their party’s decision and is expected to notify clerks on parliament about the decision.
“I have received a letter from ODM which indicates that I expunge the names of affected members from the party’s register. I have no alternative other than invoking political parties Act,” she said.
“The party has not notified them officially and I had to do that. I will write a letter to the clerks of parliament instructing that they no longer in their sponsor parties,” she added.
Should the deal go through, the events will be a replica of 1966 when several members defected from KANU to KPU hence compelled to face a by election.
Among the high profile leaders who will be affected include firebrand legislator Ababu Namwamba and Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya.
