President Uhuru Kenyatta Tuesday chaired a special Cabinet meeting on fast-tracking payments of pending bills to youth, women and persons with disabilities under the empowerment program – AGPO.
The Cabinet received a report from Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and also examined proposals from all ministries on how to make payments of debts owed to suppliers under the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO).
The Cabinet will reconvene on Thursday to make a decision on the way forward.
The program, initiated through President Kenyatta’s directive in 2013, requires that 30 percent of all Government tenders should be given to youth, women and persons with disabilities.
Cabinet also discussed proposals presented by Agriculture CS Willy Bett on how to attract more youth to engage in agribusiness.
The Government gave a commitment to fund a program aimed at getting more youth involved in agriculture enterprise.
The topic of how to make agriculture more attractive to the youth will be one of the major discussions at the 5th Africa Green Revolution Forum that will be held in Nairobi in September.
The Africa Green Revolution Forum is the largest forum on agriculture in Africa and focuses on how to advance policies and secure investments in the agricultural sector.
