Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has praised Cord's decision to call off demonstrations planned for January 4.
Cord last week announced it will kick off demonstration to block the passage of the proposed election laws.
The laws allow for the use of the manual voting system which, Cord is against.
The proposed legislation were unanimously passed by Jubilee MPs in Parliament but the Senate canceled debate of the same until January 4, to allow for more consultations.
"We want peace and stability in the country," Wamalwa said while on a tour of stalled irrigation projects that are set to be revived along River Sabaki in Malindi constituency.
"The economy of the country depends on tourism. Without peace, it will be affected."
He said mass action, as earlier on called by the opposition will destabilise the country.
Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula after the passage of the proposed laws in Parliament convened a press conference and announced that protests will kick off in January until the laws are suspended.
Cord claims Jubilee wants to use the manual voting system to rig the 2017 general elections.
The opposition maintains only an electronic voting system will be used during the 2017 polls.
