The fishermen have for a long time been lamenting of mistreatment, claiming that their fishing expeditions are facing hindrance from the Ugandan forces who arrest, and rob them of their fish and fishing gear.

Speaking on Radio Citizen Thursday, East African Community and Northern Corridor Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya justified the Ugandan police's alleged actions, but noted that the government is pursuing a permanent solution to the same.

Despite noting that the waters surrounding the Kenyan island belongs to Uganda, the former Meru county chief said that plans are ongoing to ensure that fishermen from all the nations sharing the lake, Tanzania included, are free to roam the fresh water body.

''We have heard the complains from our people in Migingo but it is important to note that though the island belong to Kenya, the waters surrounding it fall under the Ugandan territory,'' he said.

''However, we are working on a collective strategy that will see all nations gain access to each and every corner of the lake and fishermen from all nations  allowed to freely roam the lake,'' he added.

Kenya enjoys the smallest portion of the lake, with the biggest part going to Tanzania.
