The Communication Authority has come out strongly to defend the ban that it imposed on live media coverage of Odinga's ''grand reception''.

Media houses, however, defied the ban and went ahead with live coverage of Raila's homecoming which was marred by violence.

Francis Wangusi, the Communication Authority Director General, said that the authority was not in any way gagging the media but was acting in public interest.

Wangusi said that the ban was necessary because the possibility of violence was very high.

''When the media covers an event marred by violence live, the risk of copy-cat violence is very high,'' Wangusi said.

Odinga's convoy contended with tear gas and gunshots as it made its way towards the city center.

Injuries and deaths were reported during the chaos.
