For the last two weeks, we have heard two cases in Machakos county that clearly demonstrate how the "big fish" syndrome has gotten deep into our social fabric.

The first case was that of Machakos governor Alfred Mutua. The director of public prosecutions Kiriako Tobiko had directed that Machakos governor should be summoned to the dock over irregular purchase of 16 vehicles for his executive committee.

The DPP accused the governor of abuse of office. The second interesting case is that of a chicken thief who was beaten to death in Machakos county.

While the later is now deceased, the former is yet to be charged. This clearly shows how it is hard being a small fish in a country where the big fishes are feared, favoured and glorified.

This "big fish" syndrome is eating our social fabric as much as the corruption menace.

In fact, to favour the "big fishes" is in itself a form of corruption. (In)justice is swiftly meted out on poor individuals while cases involving the rich are made to disappear mysteriously.
