A Nakuru based health activist has urged the county government to solicit for more social work volunteers to help curb the spread of cholera disease in Nakuru.
Eunice Mung’asia, the African Network Against Child Neglect and Health (ANACNH) representative based in Nakuru, while talking to this writer on Thursday after attending a joint consultative meeting with the Nakuru Cholera Tusk Force Committee members said there was an urgent need for social work volunteers in Nakuru to help carry out surveys, educate and carry out spirited campaigns in all parts of the county to help curb the cholera outbreak.
“From the reports and observations so far in place, it seems this problem is far from being over. There are still more risks and threats of many other people in Nakuru contracting Cholera. It is of my view that the government ups the campaign to eradicate the disease by soliciting for more social work volunteers to be dispatched in all parts of the county,’’ said the health activist, adding that the country basically lacks social workers.
She noted that limited staff numbers from the ministry of health and support from local and international volunteers was an impediment in the fight against the spread of the disease not only in Nakuru, but across the country and petitioned the central government to take the issue of cholera seriously.
“Like the case of Ebola in West Africa, this problem needs a lot of attention before the situation gets out of hand. What is happening now is not sufficient at all. It is like a drop in the ocean because environmental and living conditions of majority of Kenyans are pathetic,” she added.
