Residents in Kibera have been urged to try out the Safi jiko cookers which are energy saving and safe for home use.

Speaking at Kamukunji grounds on Wednesday, Joseph Ochieng’, a Safi jiko dealer said the cooker does not use electricity and hence will minimise fire cases often witnessed in the area.

“At least 20 per cent of fire tragedies in Kibera are caused by carelessness of residents. They leave their heaters on therefore causing fire. We decided to introduce new forms of cooking which uses spirit to cook. This is better because it saves up to 95 per cent of fire cases,’ said Ochieng’.

“Our jiko cannot cause fire since the spirit evaporates faster hence it is safe for use,” he said.

Ochieng’ also urged people to embrace other forms of fuel such as solar energy to charge their phones and lighting.

"Solar will only operate when there is sunshine but also it is good since it cannot cause any fire," he said.
