The family of the late Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Bishop Alexander Muge has called for a fresh probe into the cause of his death about 28 years ago.
Bishop Muge died in a mysterious road accident in Busia in August1990 after the then Labor Minister Peter Okinda warned him never to step in the Western Kenya region.
Speaking after a funeral mass for the late Bishop's widow Herma at the ACK Cathedral in Eldoret town on Wednesday, the family's burial committee chairman who is also nephew to the late Bishop, Noah Melly said the government has never revealed under what circumstances the bishop died.
“Failure to investigate the cause of the death has caused a lot of suffering to us as a family. Anyway, our only consolation is that Bishop Muge was a man of God. The verdict is with God,” said Melly.
Retired ACK Eldoret Diocese Bishop Thomas Kogo narrated the last moments with Bishop Muge who was a critic of the KANU regime.
“He told me he had received death threats against visiting Katakwa but he said God’s ministry had to come first,” noted Bishop Kogo.
“He wanted everybody to be treated equally. He had a heart for the oppressed. Where there was injustice, he always went there despite threats to his life,” added ACK Kajiado Diocese Bishop Jeremiah Tama.
Bishop Muge's widow died last Friday at her home in Elgon View estate in Eldoret town aged 66.
She will be laid to rest on Thursday at Kipng'urei village in Nandi county.
