Traders in Garissa County are reaping huge returns following a rise in the demand for camel milk.
Milk dealers in Garissa town on Thursday said there is a systematic approach being employed by traders in the devolved unit to market camel milk, a product that has for long not attracted the attention of many especially countryside folk.
The traders said Nairobi is becoming one the key markets for the product as many Kenyans and visitors try on new products.
Abubakar Omar, a leading milk dealer, and coordinator, Garissa Milk Sellers Association (GLDA) told Citizen Radio that there are plans to spread marketing campaigns to other major towns in Kenya beginning with Mombasa and Kisumu.
"Camel milk is very healthy but many people do not know that," Abubakar said.
"Many farmers are losing cattle and goats to drought and camels are remaining the best bet for us. We are looking at increasing their numbers as demand for their milk also gains momentum."
Garissa County is an arid zone and majority of cattle keepers rear camels because of their ability to withstand high temperatures associated with the North Eastern region.
Some high-end hotels in Nairobi's Central Business District presently sell tea made of camel milk.
