The office of the Lamu County commissioner has unveiled a campaign to unite herders and farmers who have been embroiled in endless tussles over pasture in the recent months. Lamu County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo will lead the campaign, as the county and national government fight to find an amicable solution to the problem.Kitiyo said he will work with Lamu police commander Muchangi Kioi and AP commander Joseph Kigen among other security officials in the region to restore calm in the area following differences between the two factions. The committee has organized tours in different areas including Hindi, Mpeketoni and Witu divisions among other areas where herders and farmers have been engaging in fights.Speaking to residents at Maisha Masha in Witu on Sunday, the officers in charge of security called upon the residents to find alternative and peaceful ways of settling their differences rather than using force. This comes after incidents of farmers attacking and injuring herders for grazing their livestock on their land led to conflicts among different communities in the area.
