Two people died after a car they were travelling plunged into river Tana in Mororo area, Bura constituency.
Garissa OCPD Aron Moriasi who confirmed the incident said there were four occupants in the saloon Volks wagon car which veered off the road and plunged into the river.
According to Moriasi, the vehicle was coming from Madogo to Garissa but the occupants diverted to a local social joint in Mororo when the driver lost control and plunged into the crocodile infested river in unclear circumstances during the Sunday night incident.
Mr Moriasi said the two passengers, the driver and a passenger in the front seat managed to free themselves and swam into safety.
The OCPD said the two who survived, Mr David Wendo, an NIS desk officer based in Garissa who was the driver and Ms Beryl Atieno one of the passengers seated next to him, were treated for minor injuries and later released.
“The two managed to free themselves and swam into safety. Police officers rushed to the scene immediately and condoned off the scene. However, the two others unfortunately never surfaced.”
“At this point in time we are doing everything within our powers as a police service to ensure that the vehicle and the two victims are taken out of the river in whatever form,” said the OCPD.
Mr Moriasi said that Cyprian Ogallo who was a student at NEP technical college and George Onyango a teacher at one of the schools in Garissa town are suspected to have drowned inside the vehicle adding that the police had not ascertained whether the two were brothers.
