Workers working at car washes in Garissa town on Thursday held protests against the decision by the county water company to disconnect them with water without notice.

The workers accused the Garissa Water and Sewerage Company of closing down their businesses without proper consultations.

The workers said they have been operating the businesses for over 10 years and their families depend on them.

“Our businesses have been closed down by the water firm yet we pay monthly bills. We are demanding the water be connected so that we can proceed with our work,” said Ali Hussein, one of the workers.

The traders appealed to Garissa county governor Ali Korane to intervene and help them push the water firm to connect them with water.

Ali Awdol, the firm’s official said refuted the claims that they closed down businesses without notice saying only illegal water tapping was disconnected.

“Some car wash businesses have been running illegally because the workers have tapped water illegally,” said Awdol.
