Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has said that the county is losing millions in revenue to cartels stationed at entry points in the region.
The governor said the cartels were sabotaging the county government’s revenue collection efforts.
He said the entry points, which include Miritini, Likoni, Shanzu raise Sh2 million a day, adding that the revenue collected in the said areas could be higher.
“The county has not been meeting its revenue target despite introducing new measures to ensure revenue collection is efficient and this is a major concern,” said Joho.
The governor said although revenue collection in some areas had gone up since 2013, his administration was yet to meet set revenue targets because of the cartels.
The governor revealed that revenue collection in Kongowea Market had gone up from Sh200,000 to Sh800,000 per day.
He, however, said that the amount would be higher if the cartels were not involved in the illegal practice.
The governor challenged the newly appointed Trade CeC Hamisi Mwaguya to end the practice.
