For more than one months, Mombasa has been experiencing an acute water shortage. A 10 litre jerrycan of fresh water is currently costing the residents Sh50.

It has been said that traders engaging in water business are allowed to tap water from the main lines which as a results is making residents to get nothing from their dry taps.

One hotelier lamented that cartels faking to be genuine entrepreneurs are the ones taping water from main lines leaving hotels and Mombasa residents with no water.

"Most of the north coast hotels don't get enough water, thanks to cartels." said Hotelier Mohammed Hersi, as quoted by Daily Nation.

Mr. Hersi wanted Mombasa Water and Sewerage Company to open up and address the issues posed by cartels.

Earlier in February, after Kenya Power cut off electricity supply to the Baricho Waterworks in Malindi, which is the main reservoir for the Coast region, for  Sh60 million bill, Mombasa Water and Sewerage Company blamed illegal taping saying some residents were tapping water before it reaches the measuring unit, making them to use water as well as selling to those who needed it, without paying for it.
