The spirited new cashless fare system that is being unrolled countywide by the government will not materialise, a youth lobby group leader in Nakuru has predicted. Chairman of Mawanga Youth Agenda (MYA) Antony Waweru while protesting the move stated that system if fully implemented will render youth in the country jobless told this writer in an interview that there were already indications of the new system’s failure. Waweru observed that so far the cashless fare system had not been introduced in Nakuru and those most public transport crew members and passengers were yet to be introduced to the new development. He hinted that most local commuters were low earners and rural area residents who cannot afford to purchase the automated fare system in advance and will likely avoid using it. “There is a huge likelihood that this system will not live to the government and public service vehicle owners’ expectations. I think not enough research was done to examine its strength and weaknesses. It is not viable especially amongst low earners and rural dwellers,” observed Waweru. He suggested that the government should render the system a choice but not a mandatory operation device to avoid creating complications that will affect operators and commuters. Last week the youth group leaders threatened to mobilize local matatu crew to demonstrate in protest of the new system as it would render local youth involved in touting unemployed.
