The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops has commended the government for the efforts it has made to tackle corruption despite the numerous challenges facing the nation.
Through a statement sent to newsrooms on Tuesday which was also seen by this writer, the bishops also commended the government for declaring corruption a threat to national security.
“The Catholic Bishops of Kenya, cognizant of the challenges facing our country, applaud the Government efforts to tackle corruption and declare it a sin and a threat to national security. We remain committed to having a common approach to ensure one common bond united in building our nation together,’ read part of the statement.
They were making reference to President Uhuru’s remarks on Monday where he outlined plans to fight corruption after holding a meeting with various stakeholders at State House, Nairobi.
The statement which also focused on Pope Francis’s visit to Kenya, urged those who will travel to Nairobi to attend the mass which will be presided over by the Holy Father to take care of the environment and one another.
They clerics further asked drivers to be careful on the road and to also mind other road users.
"As we prepare ourselves to journey to Nairobi, and for those of us who have already begun the journey and others already here within the city, we make a special request that we remain in the spirit of caring for one another. As you travel, drive safely and mind fellow drivers and road users. Care for our environment and let us ensure we do our best to keep our city clean,’ added part of the statement.
In addition, the bishops have thanked the government for ensuring that the Pope will be given a befitting welcome by ensuring that logistics are in place. We also thank all those who have been involved in preparing for the Pope’s first visit to Kenya and Africa.
"On behalf of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, we wish to thank the Government of Kenya led by His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta who has been at the forefront in making sure all the logistics are in place and that the Holy Father will receive a befitting welcome. We also wish to specially thank the Joint National Steering Committees who have worked tirelessly, and all Kenyans who have been part of this great journey," said the statement.
