Thika Sub-county Livestock officer Jackline Mwangi has termed the recently concluded vaccination drive of cattle against Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in the sub-county as successful.
The three day exercise that came to a close on Saturday last week, was also carried out in all the other sub-counties in Kiambu County and was targeting all cattle like sheep, cows and goats.
"We were targeting around 4000 animals in the sub-county but we exceeded that number meaning that the exercise was successful in this sub-county. Farmers heeded to our call to vaccinate their animals against RVF," said Mwangi in her Thika office on Tuesday.
She noted that the vaccination was going to save the farmers from incurring unnecessary losses as a result of losing their livestock through the disease which has already broken out in some counties.
Mwangi called upon the farmers who may have been left out to liaise with her office to have their livestock vaccinated too before it is too late.
"Prevention is better than cure. The Sh100 we were charging every farmer to have their animals vaccinated is minimal compared to the potential risk of not having them vaccinated. So, we are still calling farmers who may have been left out during the exercise to contact us for assistance," Mwangi added.
