Breast infection affects the tissues of the breast which causes pain, fever, swelling (enlarged lymph nodes), breast tenderness, chills, lumps and in serious cases nipple discharge.

Many breastfeeding mothers feel the pain when their babies are feeding and they assume it as just pain caused by the baby pulling the nipples but it might also mean an underlining medical condition. If you feel a lump inside your breast or if your nipples are swollen, then you should seek medication treatment because it is highly likely that you are suffering from breast infection.

What therefore cause breast infections? According to a health website www.healthline.com, most breast infections are caused by two types of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and Streptococcus agalactiae. These bacteria passes from a baby’s mouth to the mother’s breast during breastfeeding. They then affect the fatty tissues inside the breast. Cracked nipples increases the chances of breast infection though this method. Fortunately, these bacteria are not harmful to the baby.

Another cause of breast infection is the plugging of milk duct inside the breast. When milk ducts are blocked, the flow of milk is hampered and it causes sharp pains when the baby tries to suck the milk. The bacteria found inside the tissues then multiply and causes infection i.e. swelling of the breast.

Another cause of breast infection is diabetes in women with weak immunity. This type of breast infection is known as non-lactational mastitis because it is not associated with breastfeeding. It can also be caused by medical procedures such as lumpectomies or radiation therapy.

A woman with the symptoms of breast cancer can be taken through biopsy and mammogram tests. If the diagnosis reveals breast infection, there are antibiotics which can cure the infection. In case where the breast has abscess cause by severe infection, it can be clinically incised and drained.
