A section of leaders from Mt Kenya region have asked elected leaders to tone down on 2022 political debacle and focus on Kenya’s development; strengthen democracy too.

In an exclusive interview with Hivisasa on Sunday, a former aspirant for Kiambu County Women Representative seat Gladys Chania said that 2022 political talk has driven development agenda off course.

She noted that a section of leaders elected in the August 8, 2017 polls have abdicated their duties to work for the citizens and are now actively engaged in 2022 succession politics.

Chania reminded politicians that Kenyan voters have a right to vote independently and democratically without pressure from any quarters while enjoying services offered by elected leaders.

“We believe Kenyans should be allowed to vote independently and democratically,” said Chania.

“If any person feels that we need to promise votes in bulk, then, it should be bargained first but not on reasons that majority don't understand,” the Kiambu politician stated.

Chania opined that President Uhuru Kenyatta has been left as lone ranger while some of his camp members who stuck by him in last year’s elections shift focus to 2022.

“The truth is an elected politician can lose nothing in this kind of behavior because his tenure is already catered for by our taxes but what about us the ordinary citizens? She asked. “We are losing the development focus as all eyes are turned to campaign wars on who is who.”

“Our youth are languishing with degrees in pockets and come elections time, they are used as voting machines-getting directed where to cast their votes. This time we are saying no to this trend of impunity.”

She added, “2017 we voted one president per party-I voted Jubilee so, I voted for Uhuru and his term is still on so #IamforUhuru and 2022 I will decide who to vote but won't be told who to vote.”

The 2022 debacle has put Deputy President William Ruto on the spotlight in the past week.

Several quarters feel that Ruto’s lieutenants who are elected MPs and Senators have abandoned the electorate in dispensing their mandate and are proactive in the succession politics come 2022.
