A nominee for the Uasin Gishu County Executive in the Agriculture Department was on Tuesday put to task to explain his alleged involvement in the diversion of subsidized fertilizer scam that rocked the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) in 2016.

Samuel Yego was the Eldoret NCPB manager during the time when there were allegations of over 10,000 bags of subsidized fertilizer being diverted and later sold at a higher price.

He was among the officers who were suspended to allow investigations into the scandal.

"Were you part of the cartel that was involved in the diversion of the fertilizer from NCPB," asked Kaptagat MCA Jonathan Kiplagat.

In his response, Yego admitted that he was suspended over the scandal but denied any involvement.

"Being the man in charge of NCPB where the scandal happened I had to be suspended to pave way for investigations but I was later reinstated after no evidence linked me to the matter," he said.

"It's also worth noting that I was not among the 26 staff who were dismissed following the conclusion of the investigation as I was later given a promotion to go the head office," he added.
