Uasin Gishu County Education Executive Enock Muigei has opposed the proposal by National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale, to devolve the education unit to counties.
Addressing journalists in his office on Monday, Muigei said that devolving education would be a disaster to the sector.
He said that the education sector is sensitive, and is better handled by the national government, and should be considered for devolvement at a later stage.
“Devolving education to counties at this stage is not wise, we don’t have the resources to handle the sector,” he said.
The education executive either urged the national government to put in place appropriate measures that will promote education across the county.
Duale made suggestions over the weekend that education be devolved, so that teacher’s issues can be tackled once and for all.
Meanwhile, the Uasin Gishu county education executive has said that the county has set aside enough money for bursaries, saying all that needs to be done is application by needy students.
Muigei at the same time lauded Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates, who performed well in last year’s examination.
He added that the county was among top performers, though there was no rankings, but basing on individual performance per school.
He said that the county government will continue to support education programmes for better results in national examinations.
