Kiambu County labour minister has lamented over magistrates imposing cheap fines to illicit brew users.

Speaking in Thika town, Dominic Gicheru furiously expressed his wrath on how youngsters have been destroyed in the area on grounds of engaging is chang’aa brewing, use of bhang, and other many forms of illicit brews and later robbing area residents.

Gicheru warned magistrates of Thika court against imposing cheap fines whose effect is not felt by law offenders.

“What is this now, it is seriously out of control; how can you give a fine of five thousand to illicit brew brewers? They pay that amount instantly and later happily join back their colleagues in the harmful activity,” he added.

The minister promised to use his authority to destroy the activities killing the young generation, terming it as sad.

“who are magistrates?, they are people like me and you; I pledge to bring this destruction to a stop if the judiciary has been unable to end it, in fact some of the magistrates must be investigated if such are fines they impose,” he lamented.

Gicheru revealed that more than 1200 youths have already been addicted in the illegal activities, and thereby require rehabilitation.

He asked the area OCPD to willingly and honestly join him in the fight against use of drugs in the area.

He however assured those who adhere to law like acquiring their business licenses his full support and protection.

His speech comes after Governor Kabogo facilitated destruction of more than a thousand liters of chang’aa in Makoneni-Thika.
