Political and women activists at Chaani in Changamwe have decried illegal dumping in Chaani primary and secondary school compound.
The women led by Changamwe politician Safia Dima said that dumping in the school compound was a threat to children’s health and must immediately stop.
Speaking at Changamwe on Monday evening, Dima said that since the Mombasa county government has launched an operation to close illegal dump sites in the county it should move with speed and shut down Chaani dump site.
She said that the heaps of garbage lying in the school compound need to be cleared immediately and locals warned against exercising illegal dumping in the area.
Dima said that Chaani was the only school with a dump site in its compound and none of the local politicians cared about the health being of the pupils in the school.
“We have the Chaani Ward representative Junior Wambua, the area MP Omar Mwinyi among other leaders they should act on this issue,” she added.
She revealed that the heaps of garbage have also acted as a hiding place for criminal gangs in the area thus also posing a security threat to children especially during morning hours when they are heading to school.
Dima also said that the school lacked fence to improve the security of the students and asked the school management to work on fencing the school.
While responding to the complaints Changamwe Member of Parliament Omar Mwinyi said that he is working together with the Mombasa County government to shut down the illegal dump site within Chaani primary and secondary school compound.
He said that within this week, all the solid waste in the school compound will be removed and the dump site completely closed.
“We will deal with whoever dumps in that particular site let there be proper disposal of garbage in our constituency,” he said.
