Nyamira woman representative Alice Chae will lead hundreds of county residents in a one-day road show on Thursday to sensitise residents against female genital mutilation.
The roadshow which is also co-hosted by the national government will be launched at Ekerenyo before passing through Kiabonyoru-Kebirigo-Nyamira-Nyamaiya and Miruka trading centres before proceeding to the neighbouring Kisii County where it will culminate at Gusii stadium.
On Wednesday, Mrs Chae said the roadshow would be beneficial since it will involve a host of qualified counselors who will give civic education to residents about negative effects of FGM.
“Female genital mutilation is a catastrophe in our community and we cannot run away from it. We are hosting a roadshow so that we reach our people and educate them about this outlawed practice,” she said.
“The exercise is timely because we have a number of counselors who will teach our people on how to adopt alternative rites of passage for our girls other than FGM. It exposes girl child to unwarranted health hazards especially during delivery,” she added.
She challenged parents to turn up in large numbers to pick sensitive information that would help them take responsibility in safeguarding girl child in the community.
“It’s my wish that parents will show up so that we educate each other on how to combat this. It’s a menace that has existed for years and time has come for parents to take responsibility and help government curb the practice,” she said.
