There are various challenges facing education in Garissa. Some of these challenges include insecurity, drought, dry weather conditions, poverty among others.
As a result of these challenges, many children in this area fail to get the necessary educational facilities. Although education is a right to every child, some of this challenges make it hard for children in Garissa.
Most children are willing to go to school and get educated but unfortunately, that becomes very difficult for them.
Insecurity has been a major factor leading to poor education in this area. Children fear going to school since they know that terrorists may attack at any time. This creates tension, forcing the childing to stay at home.
Others fear that they may go to school and later find that their family members have relocated due to attacks. They also fear attacks from terrorists while in school.
As a result of this challenge, most children in this area do not attend school, which has led to the increase of illiteracy in the region.
Many teachers in the country may prefer to quit their jobs than to work in this region. This is as a result of the dry weather conditions in this area.
These weather conditions have made the education environment unconducive. The teacher-student ration in the area is not balanced, meaning the few teachers are not able to handle a large number of students.
The hot temperatures in the area also make it hard for them to learn due to being uncomfortable while in class.
The hot and dry weather conditions make it hard for agriculture in the region. At times, children who are supposed to be in school learning opt to go help their parents in searching for food rather than going to school which they believe is a waste of time.
