Former Kibwezi MP Kalembe Ndile has supported the move by Jubilee MPs to amend the election laws ahead of the repeat presidential election.

The former lawmaker says that the amendments will seal rigging loopholes in the repeat presidential election and subsequent by-elections that are likely to rise from the election petitions.

Kalembe says that the election laws amendment is in favor of the opposition which he claimed has been complaining of rigging.

The former MP said that the amendments provides punitive  punishment for election offenders. He asked NASA to support the amendments and stop threats of boycotting the repeat election.

“In my opinion, the election laws amendment is in good faith and in fact the committee in charge of the amendment Bill should recommend for more punitive punishment for election offenders,” he said as quoted by capital fm.

Ndile said that the repeat presidential election will be free of malpractices if the amendments sail through.

The opposition has vehemently opposed the election amendment to the elections terming it a ploy by Jubilee to rig in President Uhuru Kenyatta in the repeat presidential election.

The opposition claims that Jubilee is pushing for amendments to prolong Uhuru’s presidency.

Opposition leaders have threatened to snub the repeat presidential election if Jubilee fails to drop the amendments.

The committee on the 2017 election laws amendment Bill is currently conducting public hearings on the proposed changes.

The IEBC has also opposed the push to amend the election laws saying that its time is not right.
