Farmers in Chania ward have been advised to plant crops that take a short duration before maturity to increase food security in the area.

Speaking from Chania ward offices on Monday, the ward agricultural administrator Moses Karume noted that plants that take a short duration do not only increase food security but also allow farmers to make more harvests that increase their returns.

Karume noted that farmers who apply crop rotation, for instance, make much profit from different types of farming. He acknowledged the presence of agricultural science that brought GMO which he said has increased food security in the country.

"Farmers should note that planting crops that take a long duration before maturity increases food insecurity. Crops that are scientifically made grow faster allowing farmers make more cash as well as increasing their yearly harvest and thus reducing the levels of poverty. Let us embrace modern farming which is agricultural related," he said.

Karume revealed that his ward would benefit from the sub-counties given money to improve agricultural activities in the areas.

"We have been allocated 1 million from Gatundu North sub-county the cash that was given by the county of Kiambu to improve the agricultural activities in this area. We have fish farmers, tea farmers and other daily crop farmers like maize who will benefit from technical and advises from our experts," he added.

He encouraged farmers to harvest water to cater for the expected dry season.
