Police officers on Tuesday morning engaged a hostile crowd that was opposing the demolition of structures built on the fence of Moi Girls'Secondary School in Kibera.
The officers were forced to fire shots in the air to disperse the traders as who were protesting the demolition. Armed police officers were deployed to the school on Tuesday morning to oversee the demolition of the structures by City Hall officials.
The operation was carried out under tight security that saw the road leading to the school are barred by the officers despite resistance by residents. The angry traders threw stones at the policemen in retaliation.
The demolitions are in accordance with City Hall's new plan to bring down all unsafe structures in the city.
Governor Mike Sonko noted that an audit on buildings conducted by the Nairobi City Inspectorate Department revealed that several buildings need urgent inspection.
The audit was conducted between January and February. This comes after last Saturday’s incident where a 15-year-old female student in Form 2 was assaulted and raped while going to the washrooms at around 2 am.
All male teaching and non-teaching staff living within Moi Girls have been ordered to undergo DNA testing.
Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, who announced the closure of the school, mentioned that the government will conduct a security assessment at the institution, adding that they will use the incident to formulate a security policy for schools countrywide.
